Lost in Labels

A child is born
label it quick
Gender, race, surname, place,
skin color, zodiac, adjectives without a face
write it, define it, before they can see
put up the walls before they can speak
placed in the pyramid and the box before their first step
bring on the adjectives now that the labels are set
privileged without effort or deprived of basic rights
lets define their life and their fights

When will we break this practice
out of control need to define
So many souls lost in labels
dont you see, we are beyond the lines

We earn our labels
Strong, kind, compassionate, brave
we build our families
soul by soul, the connections we crave

Belonging nowhere and yet here I am
a wild card hybrid of sorts
No religion or country or language or race
I refuse for them to define me or confine me
or put me in place

My home is this land
My family its creatures
the trees, birds and bees know me
they dont look to define us

Connected without cause
united without purpose
I am a human with no labels
trying to fit in amongst us
