Plastic existence

An article on plastic and the impact it has on our health got me thinking about where we are today. A few 100 years ago, there was no plastic or teflon and not that plastic has changed the way we do things at the core of it all. We still cook, eat and go on with our everyday lives, just the container has changed, the storage medium has changed. Maybe it has added to convenience but how significant is that when compared to its long term impact across generations. When I am told that a non-biodegradable chemical is introduced in my body which may never leave it and not only that, it actually is manipulating me genetically, the question becomes is it worth the convenience. Then I see an ad by Ziploc talking about bags I can steam vegetables in. Not only are you actually cooking in plastic and calling it health food when maybe it isnt really, the ad ends saying "no clean up". That statement is true only if you confine the clean up to the immediate surroundings. For a person it is their house, or yard. As long as there is no garbage in that area, it is fine. Isnt this the mentality of an ostrich burying his head and claiming if I dont see it, it doesnt exist. So if I throw the bag away and it is out of my sight, it is not my problem anymore! When all these bags end up in a landfill somewhere and finally transfer their chemicals into the soil and water systems. Eventually where do they end up? In the species consuming the vegetables grown in the soil contaminated by the plastic created by the species. How true a statement, "what goes around, comes around". Where did simple living go? If you think about it we are the only known species in the history of planet earth, that has modified its environment to the maximum for its comfort. Did nature plan us to be this way and culminate in this lifestyle we are leading, or are their more steps that we cant even imagine. Will we mutate into some other species eventually or man is the end of the pyramid due to his own stupidity? What amazes me is that we are so busy worrying about man made problems like religious wars, economy, politics, technology (convenience), we forget to see the big picture. The picture which includes our real home, this planet which consists of soil, water, fire, wind. They all co-existed and were given to us in a form which worked well together. We are altering their components for our short term benefit but in the end it will all end up back in the soil or water or air. Will the new forms co-exist, probably not. It makes me sad to think of how narrow and confined our thoughts are. How we dont think of processes which are close looped but irreversible. Will man bury himself further in this quicksand of plastic and toxins or is there still time?
