Stats and Math can be as boring or as interesting as one might perceive. Pretty much all engineers deal with stats with or without prior knowledge. Either it is just watching for trends or setting up limits or modelling and developing formulae. The similarity in approach for any kind of analysis couldnt be more logical. Most of this logic has an amazing parallel to our lives as well.
To begin, we try and pick a dataset. It cant be too huge, but again it cant be too small. One doesnt want to be lost in all the noise with a big dataset, one tries to reduce redundancy and unnecessary noise. While you still want enough to satiate and balance and have confidence in the conclusions made. Then comes the actual raw charting and hunting for trends. Some ppl have an eye for it. If one picked a magnification to look at the data, one can find multiple signals depending on how you look at it. Too close, you might just see a random pattern, too far you might see no differences and probably a straight line. Just at the right magnification, the trend appears which brings a big smile on a seeker's face. Macroscopic continuum and microscopic discreteness was first introduced to me in a semiconductor's class, after which I have seen it beyond physics. This holds true not only in Newton or Heisenberg's world but again to a large extent in life as well. From afar, a person can be pleasant, nice, simple, without detail a person can have a simple, uncomplicated personality. It is when you are close, that the cracks, flaws, rather personality begins to surface. Preferences begin to emerge which didnt seem to exist before. Macroscopic view also makes similarity easy, while microscopically nothing can be similar to anything else. Everyone and everything has its own identity in time and space.
I used to often wonder about marraige and why does it exist. Everyone has to find their own reason to get into the bond for life. For some it is something beautiful rising out of love, while for some it just is. For the practical me I think it is more for continuum. We all are born with certain people we call "ours". This may include parents, brothers, sisters, etc. These ppl were before and will not remain throughout our lives. But for continuum of the fact that we need to have ppl who we belong to, who we think of in moments of despair and who we share our joy with, we need to create new bonds. And marraige is just another way of continuum of this fact. We live and love in a circle of people we call our own. Stats are applicable here too, set theory to be precise. Imagine all the ppl in the world to possess certain features. Each feature being a set. So there are hundreds of circles, big and small overlapping, intersecting....and people fall in different intersections depending on their preferences. Now the qn remains if people prefer people from the same intersection or an opposite intersection.
Oh well there is always a way to view things and one can always correlate it to life. I guess I dont even know which intersection I belong to and I still am bound by stats, just trying to find the signal within the noise plagued by continuity.

Seems like you are newton and socrates blended into one :-) ..
Nice thot Shwet. Never thought in that direction but it does make sense. Be at the right magnification level. :-).
All existence depends on stats and probability. Which is why any kind of analysis, even lives depends on stats, trends and probability.
microscopic discreteness and macroscopic coninuum.. wonder what happens when the speed of light is thrown in..
marriage, relationships, love are things that have been researched by many. almost everyone has a theory and no theory is wrong. I guess, the best way to understand it is to consider all the theories that are there and look for a pattern on a slightly macroscopic level.
