When man first began living in groups, rules had to be devised to keep people from misbehaving. Guidelines were laid down on how to treat others possessions, what was to be shared, how to treat people, what men would be responsible for and what women would handle, so there was no ambiguity and minimal quarrel. These were designed by the elderly with more experience for obviously good reason. Any social group of any species (ants, bees, lions, dolphins) needs to have some basic rules and a hierarchy so to speak. There were still people who broke those rules for they less control on their desires and there was no punishment at the time to scare them. So the elderly came together once again to figure out a deterrent, something that would make someone think twice before they broke the rules or committed a crime. God was born!
Scriptures were written on moral code and claimed to be God's word of how things should be. It worked for the most part, but there were still the few that tested the moral law. So the legal system came into being where based on the level of the crime, a punishment was granted. All was well until someone figured out, there is a fear in these people. If I can be the mediator between them and the feared one, God in this case. I can help them understand the code better and they could pay me in cash or kind. Soon the taste of prosperity and power to speak to this fictional God, made the priests powerful in people's eyes. The need to heal their problems, things they could not control, weather patterns, natural calamities, disease, relationship issues, biological issues, even mental issues, the priests began to claim they could solve all of these or at least try to put the case up to the all powerful.
In no time, there were preventive measures invented. If you offer fruits, grain, money for this ritual on this day and time, whatever wrong was to happen to you will not happen. There were rituals for pardoning sins and crime, rituals to obtain heirs, rituals to avert bad weather, you name it and they had a ritual, a fix for it. Soon the priests claimed power on the spirit world too, the unknown and sure why not they knew how to fix everything else. They devised human/animal sacrifice in some cases and hitting people with a broom, with smoke and fire around.
In the 21st century it is no different. We are no different. The priests still are all powerful. Our species has forgotten the morals on which religion was initially based on. The righteousness, the courage, compassion for all beings just not humans, the morals are lost. Very few who have a slight glimpse into consciousness might feel it's vastness and feel being one with every life form on this planet, the animate and the inanimate. The connection that you feel with the tree, that what makes it alive is the same as what keeps you ticking, the ability to step aside when you see a worm crawling, the ability to stop and smell the messages that the wind carries to you of rain and clouds or a distant spring, to feel the earth beneath your feet, never complaining of the weight it carries or the life it supports. And here we are lost in our everyday needs and wants of the ego and our rituals to fix things. I may never talk to my neighbors or smile at a stranger or just lend a helping hand to a passer by but they say as long as I do these rituals I will be fine. God will give me what I want. Even the fictitious God is not spared of our desires and wants.
Its a sad, delusional, unconscious and ego dominated world we live in today with war, crime, despair and not a sign of the initial moral code that it all began with. We are lost in our power games of money and ego. Everything is on sale, you pay me enough and I will do anything.
I believe the other species on this planet have more consciousness and a feeling of awareness than we do collectively. Sad and dark times, indeed! I am sorry my child for this is the only world I can offer, I only hope that you will see beyond the apparent.

This whole post pretty much covers the whole train of thoughts that pass by my mind at least once in every month. Its a strange whirlpool. and these thoughts strike you, living in the US. I can for sure tell that this post would have gotten much much bigger, if you were living in India. Not that the issues are any different... at the holistic level, the issues are the same. what separates countries are the degrees of ridiculousness and apathies.
Keep him/her away from religion, farces like patriotism and other such borders.
